It parts from a reactive fuel (usually hydrogen) and an oxidizer (in many cases oxygen) to produce water, electricity (DC) and heat.<br \/>\nIt has several parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Electrodes<\/strong> (anode, where the H2 is reduced and cathode, where H+ reacts with O2)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electrolyte<\/strong> (separate the gases, allowing the passage of H+ ions to the cathode and separate e-)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bipolar plates <\/strong>(separate the cells, \u201clead\u201d the gases and evacuate the H2O)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reactions that take place in each of the <strong>electrodes are:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/divulgah2.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pila-combustible_en.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"sombreado  alignright wp-image-910\" src=\"https:\/\/divulgah2.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pila-combustible.png\" alt=\"Pila-combustible\" width=\"336\" height=\"310\" style=\"margin:20px 0 0 20px;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divulgah2.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pila-combustible.png 660w, https:\/\/divulgah2.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pila-combustible-300x276.png 300w, https:\/\/divulgah2.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pila-combustible-600x552.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Anode reaction:<\/em> H2 \u2013>2H+ + 2e-<br \/>\n<em>Cathode reaction: <\/em>\u00bd O2 + 2H+ + 2e- \u2013> H2O<br \/>\n<em>Global reaction:<\/em> H2 + \u00bd O2 \u2013> H2O<\/p>\n<p>On the anode side, hydrogen dissociates into protons and electrons. The protons are leaded through the membrane to the cathode, but the electrons are forced to go through an external circuit (producing power) because the membrane is electrically isolated. In the cathode catalyst, oxygen molecules react with electrons (leaded through the external circuit) and protons forming water.
